Justine Neslund first spotted a pair of great horned owls in her Crystal Lake neighborhood in 2023, hearing them first, then finding them with her camera. “Mom just looks mean and Dad is like, gorgeous, and his eyes are always giant and dilated,” said Neslund, a wedding photographer who does wildlife photography on the side.

A Northern Illinois University student was charged this week after police searched his dorm room in DeKalb and allegedly found more than 20,000 images depicting child sexual abuse on his electronics. Police allege the student used photos of real people he knew and artificial intelligence to create the materials before selling them online via Snapchat.

Chester Weger, who was convicted in 1960 of a murder in Starved Rock State Park, has died. Weger, 86, spent almost six decades in prison for killing Lillian Oetting, one of three women fatally bludgeoned in St. Louis Canyon. He died June 22, according to Forensic Medical of Kansas. The agency provides coroner’s services for Clay County, Missouri, where Weger was moved this spring.

Johnsonville Foods, a longtime business mainstay on the north side of Momence, will only be a memory. Campton Hills stands to receive $9.45 million in permit fees from a proposed annexation of 962 acres with 900 homes, according to a draft annexation agreement. The charge to Geneva-based developer Shodeen Group is $10,500 per dwelling unit to a maximum of 900, of which 700 are to be single-family homes, according to the agreement.
