A new getaway spot recently opened near Starved Rock State Park. To get there, you make a turn off Route 71 and drive about 1,000 feet. And then look up. Your getaway is in the treetops. The Treehouses at Starved Rock is a 26-acre retreat carved into Starved Rock’s border. There are two treehouses available for short stays and two more under construction, with availability beginning in February.

4: Johnsburg neighbors unite to buy neighborhood bar and grill – and promise to turn down the volume

Jon Brudzinski and his wife, Izabela Halat, were at their Johnsburg neighborhood bar this summer when they heard that its owners were looking to sell. Brudzinski called their next-door neighbors, Diane Walsh and Mike Bruski, and asked if they were interested in going in on it together. “That is how it all started. We met at their house, and here we are,” Brudzinski said.

5: Momence’s Baker & Taylor to close

An employment backbone in Momence since July 1962 is permanently closing its doors, and 318 workers will be out of work. Baker & Taylor, a book publishing company on the city’s southwest side, made the announcement to its workers on Monday. Momence Mayor Chuck Steele said this was a company-wide move and had nothing to do with the quality of work being done in Momence.

6: Ex-Campton Hills police chief Steven Millar charged with 41 felonies connected to illegal gun sales

Illinois State Police took into custody former Campton Hills police chief Steven Millar, a current officer, Douglas Kucik, 42, and two former officers, Scott Coryell, 57, and Daniel Hatt, 65, Thursday morning. Millar, 60, was charged with 41 felonies, according to Kane County Circuit Clerk records.

7: Joliet attorney arrested in Minooka for alleged domestic battery of child

A Joliet attorney was arrested after he was accused in Minooka of hitting a 4-year-old family member with a belt, police said. On Saturday, officers with the Minooka Police Department responded to the 100 block of Mondamin Street for a domestic battery call, according to Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer. When officers arrived, they spoke to a witness who alleged she saw Charles “Chuck” Bretz, 67, “hitting a young female with a belt.”

8: Oswego, Plainfield agree to new 20-year boundary agreement

Oswego and Plainfield have a new 20-year boundary agreement that mirrors their previous boundary agreement for the most part. The previous 20-year agreement expired in 2024. The Plainfield Village Board unanimously approved the new agreement at its Oct. 20 board meeting, and the Oswego Village Board unanimously approved the agreement at its Oct. 21 board meeting.

9: Rock Falls man held on weapons charges after fighting police serving a protective order against him: deputy

A Rock Falls man has been charged in Whiteside County with felony weapons violations and resisting arrest after several officers, while attempting to serve him protective order paperwork, ended up having to forcibly handcuff him and carry him to a squad car.
